SF Bay Guardian: Burningman Turns 20 When Larry Harvey first burned his man on Baker Beach in 1986, nobody thought the enigmatic ritual would become the country's largest annual countercultural gathering: an enduring phenomenon that has profoundly affected the lives of those who have attended and the social fabric and fashions of the region where it was conceived. An entire generation of local artists, musicians, hedonists, dreamers, and people seeking alternatives to the dominant consumer culture have grown up in the long shadow cast by Burning Man, affecting the event and being affected by it in myriad ways, maybe more than many people will even admit. This year's 20th burn is probably reason enough for us to examine Burning Man in detail, but the spark that really ignited our interest was provided by a collection of Bay Area artists whose revolt triggered questions about what this festival is really about, why it endures, and where it's headed. You can read more about that in the first story, but the point is that we decided the questions that were being raised were worth more than a passing mention. Our goal is to write detailed stories about once a month from now through Burning Man – as well as small pieces that will appear only online here – exploring its many facets and characters and chronicling the path toward an event that promises to be the biggest and most art-filled in Burning Man's history.
