Harvard Gazette: Academic turns city into a social experiment This is positively brilliant. Antanas Mockus had just resigned from the top job of Colombian National University. A mathematician and philosopher, Mockus looked around for another big challenge and found it: to be in charge of, as he describes it, "a 6.5 million person classroom." Mockus, who had no political experience, ran for mayor of Bogotá; he was successful mainly because people in Colombia's capital city saw him as an honest guy. With an educator's inventiveness, Mockus turned Bogotá into a social experiment just as the city was choked with violence, lawless traffic, corruption, and gangs of street children who mugged and stole. It was a city perceived by some to be on the verge of chaos. Posted at 10:27 AM |

It Can't Happen Here Welcome to Amerika, comrade. In 2002 I asked my House colleagues a rhetorical question with regard to the onslaught of government growth in the post-September 11th era: Is America becoming a police state? The question is no longer rhetorical. We are not yet living in a total police state, but it is fast approaching. The seeds of future tyranny have been sown, and many of our basic protections against government have been undermined. The atmosphere since 2001 has permitted Congress to create whole new departments and agencies that purport to make us safer- always at the expense of our liberty. But security and liberty go hand-in-hand. Members of Congress, like too many Americans, don’t understand that a society with no constraints on its government cannot be secure. History proves that societies crumble when their governments become more powerful than the people and private institutions. Posted at 8:37 AM |

New Freedom Initiative/Mandatory Mental Health Screening of American Children Passes At issue is the fundamental right of parents to decide what medical treatment is appropriate for their children. The notion of federal bureaucrats ordering potentially millions of youngsters to take psychotropic drugs like Ritalin strikes an emotional chord with American parents, who are sick of relinquishing more and more parental control to government. American parents, who are sick of relinquishing more and more parental control to government? You could'a fooled me considering who they keep voting for. Give me a break please. All anyone wants is more of the same, and they'll prove it, election after election. Posted at 8:23 AM |

![]() eMachineShop - Online Machine Shop - with FREE CAD Software This is incredible...truly incredible. I was speechless when I first saw this. Imagine free design software, which quotes you a price on custom machined parts as you design and is smart enough to keep you from making dumb mistakes, or at least keeps you from designing in elements that aren't easily doable. Then takes your order, sends it off to a machine shop, and your parts arrive at your doorstep in a few weeks. If this system works well it's a huge leap forward for tinkerers, inventors, roboticists, and gizmo phreaks everywhere. eMachineShop article on USA Today Posted at 11:34 AM |
