![]() Why Windows is a Security Nightmare Should be called "just one more drop in the bucket of why Windows is a security nightmare." How long have I been saying these very things now? Pretty much since before Win98 hit the shelves. And here we are, 3 OSs later and were in worse shape, Windows security-wise. Arrrggghhhhh. Go here for more info, help, and fun. Thanks to Bruce Schneier's Cryptogram for the link. Posted at 11:22 AM |
.![]() Rolleiflex MiniDigi Remember twin lens reflex cameras like the Rolleiflex and Yashicamat? I don't just remember them, I still use one! Anyway, retro-grouches, nostalgia mavens, and generally cool people need to take a look at this new digital camera...it's a mini Rolleiflex that's a digital camera. Not a bleeding edge whiz-bang kind of machine, but a nice simple one. Very cool...at least I think so. Many thanks to Jamais for pointing this Gizmodo post out. Posted at 9:59 AM |

![]() So, today I was looking for "critical" updates for my Windows box at work, and one of the updates was an update for a font. It seems that there is something "objectionable" among the characters. What could it be, I asked myself? Well, I went in and had a look, and it turns out that there is a swastika in the font's character set in place of the tilde. A swastika. (I feel like I had read about this a while back) For those who do not know, the swastika is thousands of years old. It has been used as a symbol by native Americans, Chinese, Indians, and many others. Here's a good, brief history of the swastika- "Until the Nazis used this symbol, the swastika was used by many cultures throughout the past 3,000 years to represent life, sun, power, strength, and good luck. Even in the early twentieth century, the swastika was still a symbol with positive connotations. For instance, the swastika was a common decoration that often adorned cigarette cases, postcards, coins, and buildings. During World War I, the swastika could even be found on the shoulder patches of the American 45th Division and on the Finnish air force until after World War II." The fact is, the Nazi government stole this ancient symbol of life, and peace, and goodness. While it would be easier to just forget what the symbol meant long before Naziism, we shouldn't be so quick to take the easy road. It's pure ignorance that leads people to associate all uses of the swastika with Naziism - do you really want to be that ignorant? Sadly I'm going to guess that most people are perfectly happy being that ignorant...and complaining to Microsoft because they found a swastika in a font. Get a life. Read a book. Turn off Montel.
