Auctions By The Bay - Classic movies in a gorgeous theater We just went to see American Graffiti at the Auctions By The Bay theater in Alameda. It's an awesome theater, and they are showing awesome movies. Easy parking, clean bathrooms, friendly people. Why the "Auctions By The Bay" name? It turns out that this is the old cinema on the former Navy Base in Alameda. The owner of the Grand Lake Theater owns it now, and they use it as an auction house...preview the goods in a separate building, and then bid on them in the theater. When they aren't auctioning stuff, they show old movies. The place has been restored and is kind of like a mini Paramount...only 400 seats. I suppose just about all the theaters build back then look like that - that's just how they built 'em. This falls into the category of "these folks are doing something really cool, but if people don't go they'll have to stop...so get over there and see some great old movies" You'll probably catch us there sometime. Hyflux - It's So Clear Picture your office water cooler, but without a bottle on top, or a connection to a water line. It draws it's water supply from the moisture in the air. Pretty cool. Posted at 2:36 PM |

Indie 103.1 So as some of you know, I was down in LA the first part of this week. My wife and I get into her car and the radio is playing Grandmaster Flash. Then on comes Rancid, and then the Beastie Boys. I say "this is great, is this a college station?" Stacy told me that it was a new station she had found and was listening to down there...it is awesome...truly awesome. They play a lot of punk (and punkish) tunes, but they mix it up with some old school, rap, and other assorted alternative stuff. Real alternative, not corporate platinum sales alternative. You can listen online...which I am doing at this very moment. How long can they last? How long before the ugly music industry behemoth takes notice and squashes them, buys them, or converts them into a "young country" station? Or are they just a cleverly punky front for that behemoth? Hmmmmm. I wonder. Regardless, they play great music, not too many ads, not too much DJ yammer, no morning-show, buddy-team, stupid mind-rot drive-time nonsense. I pray they'll last, but I'm plenty old enough to have seen every single cool radio station that came along get screwed up royally...EVERY LAST ONE OF THEM...and yes, I am fucking bitter about it. I suppose the listening public gets the radio they deserve because they certainly seem to vote overwhelmingly for drive-time drivel, central corporate programming, and multi-platinum rapid rotation. Suckers. UPDATE - The good folks at Indie 103.1 read my blog post and replied - "No worries, we ain't going anywhere and we ARE NOT changing! =)" Like I said - I pray they don't...please give them a listen, and spread the word.
