The Truth About Printer Page Yields

AHA!!!! he said with an unnerving aplomb.

I just bought a new printer. All printers base ink cartridge life on a "5% coverage" page.

So just what is 5% coverage? It took yours truly some way hella mad googlin' to find it, but I finally did. My sweat and toil is your knowledge windfall, my friends. Go on, click the link.

Apple Store Japan

A short film (not goddam short enough ;) by Masanori Fukumoto of the full length of the line to get into the Apple Store Tokyo on opening day. At least the full length of the line when he was filming.

Okay, it's probably flattering and all to Apple Computer, but really...is there nothing to fucking do in Tokyo other than stand in the world's longest line just to get into a computer store? For christ sakes people.

Thanks to Jambo for the link.

I think I need to go eat sushi now...brb

Did the MS Blaster worm cause the blackout?

If my own company woes with worms on Microsoft systems is any indication, the answer would be "yes, quite easily"

Bruce Schneier, the author of the article, is one of the sharpest folks I have ever read. He writes a monthly email newsletter called the Crypto-Gram. The Crypto part has to do with the fact that the newsletter deals with issues in cryptography. He also runs Counterpane Security, an internet security firm.

I highly recommend to everyone that they read the CryptoGram...you can check it out and get subscribed here.

In the current newsletter, Amit Yoran is "in the doghouse"...here's the short version-

The Doghouse: Amit Yoran

Here's a question: if you don't think it's possible to improve the security of computer code, what are you doing in the computer security industry?

"Amit Yoran, the new head of the Department of Homeland Security's national cybersecurity division, said the administration is assessing the impact of various regulatory proposals. One of them calls for companies to report, through the Securities and Exchange Commission, their preparedness for attacks on their computer networks.

"'For example, should we hold software vendors accountable for the security of their code or for flaws in their code?' Mr. Yoran asked in an interview. 'In concept, that may make sense. But in practice, do they have the capability, the tools to produce more secure code?'"

The sheer idiocy of this quote amazes me. Does he really think that writing more secure code is too hard for companies to manage? Does he really think that companies are doing absolutely the best they possibly can?

I can handle blatant pandering to industry, but this is just too stupid to ignore.

I have to agree. Until companies (most significantly Microsoft) choose to write more secure code, this crap will never end. The simple fact is it will take the equivalent of dynamite to get people to stop using Microsoft operating systems. Take a look at how much Microsoft may have cost you personally, not the whole world (because that is a staggering number of dollars indeed) in lost productivity. I can tell you it has cost my agency thousands of dollars, and we see no end to it on the horizon.

Do we really want software like this being used in key operations of government, military, infrastructure, AND industry?

Winter is here...the air is crisp...houses all decorated...shoppers out in droves. That must mean the second most important event of the year is right around the corner.

That's right...MacWorld Expo San Francisco.

I'll be there, looking, shopping, schmoozing, eating, etc...just like every year. Actually I think this is my 13th or 14th year there. I went to the show even in the direst years, and there were a few of those. Lately tho, the magic is back.

I'll have a couple of extra badges if anyone feels like coming along and either forgot to pre-register, or is too cheap to spend $15...ya cheap bastard. I'm not sure what days I'm going (probably Tuesday and another day TBD), but here's the show schedule:

Keynote (where Steve Jobs waxes rhapsodic about whatever is latest and greatest over there in Cupertino)
Tuesday, January 6, 2004 9:00 am - 10:30 am

Exhibit Hall
Tuesday, January 6, 2004 11:00 am - 6:00 pm (show up at 11AM to see the ultra-geeks stampede when the rope drops)(no shit - it's a stampede)
Wednesday, January 7, 2004 10:00 am - 6:00 pm
Thursday, January 8, 2004 10:00 am - 6:00 pm
Friday, January 9, 2004 10:00 am - 4:00 pm (late this day is the time to talk extra tired show workers out of stuff for cheap because they don't feel like packing it all up and carrying it home)

oh, yea...the most imortant event of the year? It's Burning Man of course.

BTW - the days I'm over there is a great opportunity for SF folks to pin me down for lunch...hint hint :)

Here's those pix I promised. I cleaned up one of them so it isn't so bad. :)

This is the actual gold crown, with root attached.

This is the tip of the other root, with the drill sticking out. The drill that was left poking out of my tooth by Dr Sean Sullivan of Concord, California.
