the BLACK KEYS - Offical Site

The Black Keys

Holy shit!!! Where do two skinny white kids get off having this much soul??? These guys play grungy distorted hard blues rock...just two of them, guitar/voice and drums...with good old fashioned production values i.e. turn on the goddam tape machine and just fucking play yer asses off!!

Truly stupendous...truly, truly. Buy their records...I did!

Recycle-a-Bicycle, New York City

A wicked cool idea...I need more hours in a day to get stuff like this off the ground here. Oh well...read on...

Recycle-a-Bicycle is an innovative, fun youth training
and environmental education initiative that has taken
root in New York City public schools and respected
after-school youth programs.

Recycle a Bike is also a hands-on way to promote
everyday bicycle use, learn bicycle mechanics, interact
with positive, forward-thinking NYC youth and a good
place to find that city bike you need!

A Visit to Yesterland - The Discontinued Disneyland

Tomorrow at 4 AM we hit the road for Disneyland. Unlike other annual trips to LA, which sometimes include a stop at The Happiest Place On Earth, this annual trip is just to spend 2 or 3 days there, with the rest of the family, all the kids, etc. This will be (by our best estimate) my 37th trip to Disneyland. Those trips were spread out over 33 of my own 36 years. To me it's like my old neighborhood...I know the streets, the layout, the buildings so well it's like going home.

Who the hell cares?

Nobody. But anyway, the link above takes you to Yesterland, a very cool site if you have ever been to Dizzyland in the past 40 years. They chronicle all of the D-land attractions which are no more. Sometimes that's a good thing, but sometimes it's sad. If you don't remember any of them then I guess the site might not mean so much...I have been on/in a huge chunk of their catalog tho.

#$%! Lenny Bruce pardoned for four-letter offenses

Holy Shit. After all this time, Lenny Bruce gets pardoned. I am of extremely mixed feelings about this. I am, on the one hand, extrememly happy that they have done this, but on the other hand irate that it will never bring him back, nor spare him the hell he was put through by those bastards all the way until his death 2 years after the conviction. There are still powers at work doing the same work that got Lenny convicted way back then. Keep your guard up.

The Current TNFA - Tracy Bonham : The Burdens Of Being Upright

What's a TNFA, I hear you ask?

Temporary New Favorite Album - you know, the disk you just got that is so good you can't stop playing it over and over and over?

So what if I'm 7 or 8 years late on getting to this one? A valid TNFA nonetheless.

Anyway, it is hard rocking, quirky, interesting, smart, funny, very awesome...and her voice is very, very yummy. She can softly, sweetly sing one second, and then scream with the best of them the next second - all in the same track.

Anyway - look for it if you didn't already get it way back in the mid nineties. :)

Ananova - 'Ghostly' image on tape at Henry's palace

I've visited Hampton Court Palace a couple times, and never saw or felt anything unusual (unless you count the English breky I had just had sending my stomach into contortions)(come to think of it, I guess that wasn't so unusual) but they caught some apparition on tape.

The apparition looks to me like someone in a bathrobe wearing a Hot Dog On A Stick beanie. But maybe that's just my sick little fantasy poking thru ;)

The Truth About Printer Page Yields

AHA!!!! he said with an unnerving aplomb.

I just bought a new printer. All printers base ink cartridge life on a "5% coverage" page.

So just what is 5% coverage? It took yours truly some way hella mad googlin' to find it, but I finally did. My sweat and toil is your knowledge windfall, my friends. Go on, click the link.

Apple Store Japan

A short film (not goddam short enough ;) by Masanori Fukumoto of the full length of the line to get into the Apple Store Tokyo on opening day. At least the full length of the line when he was filming.

Okay, it's probably flattering and all to Apple Computer, but really...is there nothing to fucking do in Tokyo other than stand in the world's longest line just to get into a computer store? For christ sakes people.

Thanks to Jambo for the link.

I think I need to go eat sushi now...brb

Did the MS Blaster worm cause the blackout?

If my own company woes with worms on Microsoft systems is any indication, the answer would be "yes, quite easily"

Bruce Schneier, the author of the article, is one of the sharpest folks I have ever read. He writes a monthly email newsletter called the Crypto-Gram. The Crypto part has to do with the fact that the newsletter deals with issues in cryptography. He also runs Counterpane Security, an internet security firm.

I highly recommend to everyone that they read the CryptoGram...you can check it out and get subscribed here.

In the current newsletter, Amit Yoran is "in the doghouse"...here's the short version-

The Doghouse: Amit Yoran

Here's a question: if you don't think it's possible to improve the security of computer code, what are you doing in the computer security industry?

"Amit Yoran, the new head of the Department of Homeland Security's national cybersecurity division, said the administration is assessing the impact of various regulatory proposals. One of them calls for companies to report, through the Securities and Exchange Commission, their preparedness for attacks on their computer networks.

"'For example, should we hold software vendors accountable for the security of their code or for flaws in their code?' Mr. Yoran asked in an interview. 'In concept, that may make sense. But in practice, do they have the capability, the tools to produce more secure code?'"

The sheer idiocy of this quote amazes me. Does he really think that writing more secure code is too hard for companies to manage? Does he really think that companies are doing absolutely the best they possibly can?

I can handle blatant pandering to industry, but this is just too stupid to ignore.

I have to agree. Until companies (most significantly Microsoft) choose to write more secure code, this crap will never end. The simple fact is it will take the equivalent of dynamite to get people to stop using Microsoft operating systems. Take a look at how much Microsoft may have cost you personally, not the whole world (because that is a staggering number of dollars indeed) in lost productivity. I can tell you it has cost my agency thousands of dollars, and we see no end to it on the horizon.

Do we really want software like this being used in key operations of government, military, infrastructure, AND industry?

Winter is here...the air is crisp...houses all decorated...shoppers out in droves. That must mean the second most important event of the year is right around the corner.

That's right...MacWorld Expo San Francisco.

I'll be there, looking, shopping, schmoozing, eating, etc...just like every year. Actually I think this is my 13th or 14th year there. I went to the show even in the direst years, and there were a few of those. Lately tho, the magic is back.

I'll have a couple of extra badges if anyone feels like coming along and either forgot to pre-register, or is too cheap to spend $15...ya cheap bastard. I'm not sure what days I'm going (probably Tuesday and another day TBD), but here's the show schedule:

Keynote (where Steve Jobs waxes rhapsodic about whatever is latest and greatest over there in Cupertino)
Tuesday, January 6, 2004 9:00 am - 10:30 am

Exhibit Hall
Tuesday, January 6, 2004 11:00 am - 6:00 pm (show up at 11AM to see the ultra-geeks stampede when the rope drops)(no shit - it's a stampede)
Wednesday, January 7, 2004 10:00 am - 6:00 pm
Thursday, January 8, 2004 10:00 am - 6:00 pm
Friday, January 9, 2004 10:00 am - 4:00 pm (late this day is the time to talk extra tired show workers out of stuff for cheap because they don't feel like packing it all up and carrying it home)

oh, yea...the most imortant event of the year? It's Burning Man of course.

BTW - the days I'm over there is a great opportunity for SF folks to pin me down for lunch...hint hint :)

Here's those pix I promised. I cleaned up one of them so it isn't so bad. :)

This is the actual gold crown, with root attached.

This is the tip of the other root, with the drill sticking out. The drill that was left poking out of my tooth by Dr Sean Sullivan of Concord, California.

Well, here it is...the day after. Taking 10mg Vicodins every few hours, those and pennicillin, eating soft foods. Not much pain. Feel kinda floaty all day. Slept about 24 hours out of the last 48...maybe more. Kinda weird not having a tooth there. Suppose I'll get used to it eventually. I still haven't cleaned up the tooth, so no pix yet :)

That's about it for now.

correction...not groggy as hell

slept ALL day

Just took the tooth out of the little package they sent it home in. Looks pretty cool. Grossed out Stacy tho. I'm quite surprised at how far out of one of the roots the drill that Dr Sean Sullivan broke off in there was sticking. When I clean the tooth up I'll post some shots here :-D

So the tooth is out. They gave me a 10mg Valium to take a hour before going in. Then went under general anesthesia for the extraction...took less than an hour, but now I have to sit here in bed eating soft food, groggy as hell, bag of frozen peas on my face, eating very soft foods.

yum

Tomorrow is the big day. Tooth 31 is coming out. You remember tooth 31, don't you? It was having troubles, so my dentist said "we need to do a root canal, and post and crown on that tooth" This translates to "you need to bend over so you can find out how shitty modern-day dental plans really are, and while you're there I'll take an extra $2000 from you on top of whatever paltry portion they cover, if you please" All except without the if you please part.

So I get the root canal, and then I get the post and full gold crown, and it's never right. It feels too high...so they "fix it"...still not right. I go back many times, dentist essentially says I'm crazy, and that I'm not actually feeling what I'm feeling. I've only had this mouth my whole life, 24/7/365.

So anyway, fast forward a year. I have a new dentist. He sends me to a specialist. Specialist looks, says "you have a cracked root, and it's caused an infection in the bone which is why you've been feeling what you have been feeling all this time...you need surgery." So I go to the surgeon. Options? Take it out, and leave it out, or take it out, do a bone graft, then an implant, then a crown. Option A - $1500...Option B - $5000, and a lifetime of extra special finicky care on that tooth.

So tomorrow morning the tooth goes bye-bye...at least from my mouth. I'll be keeping the tooth. I sure fucking paid for it.

By the way, Dr Sean Sullivan of Concord, California. Fuck you, fuck your bills, and fuck your practice. You suck.

Despite what they think of themselves, their shirts neither suck, nor are even close to being the most offensive. I suppose they didn't actually say "most offensive" there.

Anyway, good shirts, and I keep forgetting their name so I figure if it's on my blog I'll have a way to find it later.

OS X for Legacy Macs

Very cool, potentially...

While Apple has limited its support for Mac OS X to those machines that originally came with a G3 or G4 processor, it is possible to install Mac OS X on some earlier machines. The unsupported machines that work now are the 7300, 7500, 7600, 8500, 8600, 9500 and 9600, as well the clones that were based on one of these systems (the Umax S900 and J700, and many of the Power Computing models). Other models that use the PCI architecture may be made to work in time. Version 2.2 of XPostFacto adds limited support for the original Powerbook G3, the 3400, and the 2400.

Hey, looky looky!

Did I ever tell y'all about the template for this here blog? AndymanScarabicShowerdonkey knows the story because I dragged his ass thru it live. Anyway, I found this template at elementopia when I was just wee blogging pup, and loved it. I decided to use it, but then I started mucking with the template code extensively and one thing led to another, and so I paid for the template. But since it really didn't look like the original anyway I figured other people should have free access to the template...so basically I paid to keep it free forever.

The above link is to the latest blog to find that template...one called Orange Crush. Go visit, she's nice, she'll serve you danish. Oops...it's the template that's called Orange Crush, not the blog.

And here's another!!!

Howdy everyone...here's a corny old style family postcard, just to bring y'all up to date.

So how was your thanksgiving? Everyone give lots of thanks? Ours was awesome, as always. It's so nice to have a drama-free family that is full of awesome cooks. I didn't even overstuff myself...yay :)

I've been dutifully practicing the guitar...the tips of my fingers feel like hamburger. I haven't found the lost chord yet. Tons of awesome resources on the web about guitars...I'll devote a post to them in the near future.

Teaching again at The Crucible tomorrow night, and the following Tuesday. I think this makes 5 times teaching the LED class. No closer to turning the class reader into a book. No time to work on the other book either.

Stacy is wrapping up her first semester at USC this week. Only three more to go.

I guess that's about it.

Janis Ian on internet music downloads

Here is another awesome article on the issue of "music downloading."

I think it's awesome because I agree with it completely :) But that aside, it is compeletly in line with everything I have ever heard recording musicians say in many interviews. Well...non multi-multi-platinum recording musicians, that is.

The rest of her articles are pretty good too.
Find them here.
